The Homewood City Public Safety Committee on June 30 authorized installation of a public fire hydrant at the corner of Oxmoor Road and Cook Street following a staff recommendation.
Deputy Chief Paul Hall explained the request: a developer initially proposed installing a private hydrant for a new development on Cook Street, but staff recommended a public hydrant at Oxmoor and Cook because the location would serve a wider area and relieve the developer of ongoing private‑hydrant responsibility in the event the city or other users needed to rely on it. Staff said the city anticipates the estimated cost for the public hydrant at about $6,500 and annual maintenance with Birmingham Water Works at $389; staff also said the developer would contribute roughly half of the initial cost in conversations and that funds are available in the department’s budget.
Committee members asked whether any formal action was required; staff said funding exists in the hydrant expense budget. A motion to authorize installation of the public hydrant was made, seconded and approved by voice vote (recorded as unanimous).
