Homewood committee approves amendment removing Oxmoor Road from county maintenance

On June 30, 2025, the Homewood City Public Works Committee voted 5-0 to authorize an amendment to a 2020 through-road agreement with Jefferson County that removes Oxmoor Road between the tunnel and U.S. 31 from the list of county-maintained roads.
The change, brought to the committee by Kale Smith, corrects language in the 2020 agreement that staff said mistakenly included that segment of Oxmoor Road. Committee members said Jefferson County requested the amendment because the county plans projects on Oxmoor Road and the earlier map showed the segment as county-maintained.
Committee discussion noted the county maintains some features outside the right-of-way but that Jefferson County had not been maintaining the Oxmoor Road segment in question. Staff described the amendment as a corrective action to align the agreement with actual maintenance responsibilities. Committee members asked for the change and then voted to authorize execution of the amendment. Councilor Hart moved to execute the amendment; Councilor Sims seconded. The vote was 5-0 in favor.
The amendment removes the Oxmoor Road segment between the tunnel and U.S. 31 from the county-maintenance map in the 2020 through-road agreement. The committee did not provide a timeline for when the executed amendment will take effect or for any related changes to project schedules on Oxmoor Road.
The committee adjourned after the vote.
