Committee approves $51,000-range contract with Gosset Construction for four stormwater repairs

The Homewood City Finance Committee voted 3-0 on June 30 to authorize the city manager to sign a contract with Gosset Construction for four stormwater infrastructure projects across the city.

City staff presented the package as four discrete repairs: Murray Hill Road (inlet installation and pipe tie-in to reduce ponding at 1745 Murray Hill), a flume repair behind Shades Cahaba at 308 Grama Avenue to prevent overflow into backyards, inlet lowering and concrete point work on College Avenue, and gutter/inlet adjustments and a fence repair on Kenilworth to keep stormwater in the street system. Staff said the projects are consolidated into one contract to streamline procurement and contracting.

Staff identified the total cost for the four projects in the committee packet using the figure given in the presentation; the transcript lists the package total as "$51.02 50." Committee discussion indicated the intent to consolidate the projects into a single contract rather than four separate small contracts; staff also said they can bond the consolidated project. Committee members asked whether the stormwater issues were longstanding; staff responded that some of the problems have existed for many years and that recent heavy rains over the prior two months have exacerbated problems.

A motion to approve the contract was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote (3-0). The contract award directs the city manager to sign with Gosset Construction and authorizes implementation of the four listed repairs; staff did not request additional budget authority during the committee discussion.

The committee heard that the Kenilworth work is tied to prior discussion about a fence previously reviewed by the committee and that some of the work is intended to ensure stormwater flows into the city's newly installed infrastructure rather than through private driveways and yards.
