Northville honors spring champions; athletic director outlines KLA conference options

Northville Public Schools honored its spring athletic teams at the June 24 Board of Education meeting, citing five state championships, a total of 1,352 student-athletes and broad participation across 35 programs.
The recognition program featured short remarks from coaches, student-athletes and athletic department leadership. Northville’s athletic director noted district-wide participation — “1,352 student athletes. Almost 60% of the school body participated in one or more sports,” — and a list of competitive results including multiple division, regional and state placings across track and field, rowing, baseball, softball, boys volleyball, girls soccer and girls tennis.
The board heard details from coaches and student representatives: rowing student Calista Yee listed the team’s state and national finishes; baseball and softball coaches described district and regional championships and school-record performances; track coach cited an extended run of KLA West division titles for girls and a best-ever state finish for the boys. Tennis captains Sophie and Jordan summarized the varsity team’s run to a state title.
Beyond wins and records, presenters emphasized academic performance and community engagement. Coaches reported team GPAs (baseball 3.5; softball team GPA 3.66; girls soccer team GPA 3.76) and youth outreach such as coaching clinics and camps. The board and athletic staff also announced an interactive display (QR-enabled) for the athletic wing to highlight state championships and program materials.
Athletic staff described a new parent-focused pilot program, “Mentally Strong Mustangs,” intended to offer parents resources on performance anxiety, preparation and post-high-school transitions for students in extracurriculars.
After the recognitions, the athletic director provided an update on KLA conference realignment. He summarized four options the league and Northville are considering for the 2026–27 school year: 1) accept applications from Monroe and Dearborn Crestwood to replace departing Livonia schools; 2) pursue a merger with the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which would increase matchups with larger Ann Arbor-area schools; 3) explore joining the Oakland Activities Association (OAA); or 4) remain with the current West division as an eight-team conference. He told the board that athletic directors meet next week, principals will receive a July 8 update, the SEC expects to decide on merger interest in early August, and the KLA hopes to reach a clearer path by Oct. 1.
The athletic director noted trade-offs under consideration: competitive balance and programming (for example, ninth-grade junior varsity scheduling), travel distances and the impact on student opportunities. He said the district’s priority is finding the option that best preserves robust programming for Northville’s 35 athletic programs and its high participation levels.
Board members and district staff did not take formal action on conference membership that night; they were updated on next steps and timelines and said they would bring a recommendation back to the board once league partners and principals complete their reviews.
The board and athletic department will continue regular updates through the summer; the next formal recommendation is expected after the AD/principal process and league decisions.
