Bond program update: roofs, parking lots and classroom additions advance across Birmingham schools

At the Birmingham Board of Education meeting on June 30, the district’s bond-program construction representative provided a quarterly dashboard describing current commitments, active projects and near-term schedules tied to the district’s 2023/2024 bond work.

Mr. Goldman, representing the district’s construction team and its contractor partner, reported “commitments of close to a million dollars—922k—for FF&E” and about $1.3 million in technology commitments, plus $2.1 million in design-prime project commitments. He said construction work began the day after school let out and that crews had already made measurable progress on multiple sites.

Specific project updates included substantial completion of the Groves pool roof, ongoing roofing work at BCS, poured slabs and framing for the Bingham Farms addition and flooring and furniture installation in Bingham Farms classrooms. Goldman also described behind-the-scenes work including an underground water-detention system at the Seaholm north lot, new acoustical panels and flooring in Quarton, boiler replacement there, and a chiller replacement at Midvale that was completed and commissioning was underway.

Goldman told trustees the Bingham Farms renovation will be ready in the fall and its addition will follow around mid‑winter break; Courton renovations will also be ready for students in the fall. He said the bond program includes non‑construction items such as buses, FF&E, technology and security and that the district will return to the board for approvals as additional contracts and delivery schedules are finalized.

Trustees asked a small number of clarifying questions; no board action was required during the update. Goldman said the team will return with more updates in August and completion photos when projects finish.
