The Flagstaff City Council on July 1 approved two uses of the FY26 council initiative fund: $10,000 to help the Northern Arizona University marching band attend the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and $3,500 to support the Market of Dreams, a small business incubator, for outdoor lighting and safety improvements.
City clerk and communications director Stacy Salzberg presented the requests, noting the NAU band’s selection as one of about 10 bands chosen for the televised parade and the band’s fundraising needs for travel and equipment; staff said the total cost for 300 band members could be around $600,000 and that NAU had raised over $200,000. Council member Joanne Aslan proposed the Market of Dreams request after the nonprofit said it had a funding shortfall that would leave finishing touches unfunded; staff said the Market asked for $5,000 but Aslan proposed a $3,500 contribution tied specifically to the Market’s safety and lighting needs.
Councilmembers discussed other community needs and prior uses of initiative funds; staff informed council that the Flagstaff Family Food Center would receive $30,000 from other city funds and that the city had funded resiliency hub staffing. After discussion about timing (the action occurred on July 1, the first day of the fiscal year), council approved both contributions by voice vote.
