Residents and Shade Tree Commission members told the Town Council that a food truck parked beneath the Morristown Green's mature tree canopy is emitting concentrated exhaust that could damage trees and affect public health, and they asked the council to find a solution that preserves both the business and the canopy.
Kristen Ace, representing the Morristown Shade Tree Commission, said the commission observed "a large black plume of concentrated pollution smoke" from the truck entering the Green's canopy and warned that "this kind of sustained concentrated pollution will eventually be deadly for the trees." Ace asked the council to seek a solution that would allow the truck to operate without damaging the canopy.
Alice Cutler, president of the trustees of the Morristown Green, told the council she supports the food truck but raised concerns about exhaust and garbage. "If it's impacting the trees, it's certainly impacting all of our health," Cutler said, and she noted that, in her view, the trailer is larger than the space allowed by the town ordinance.
Bill Byrne, a resident, also raised a related accessibility concern about a mailbox and a tree on a sidewalk that he said leave insufficient room for wheelchair passage; the council agreed to follow up offline about the specific location.
Council members said a subcommittee that has been working on food-truck issues will meet again with the vendor to discuss possible fixes, including asking whether the vendor could install a better exhaust system. The council also asked town staff to check whether the truck's size complies with local ordinance requirements; Morristown Partnership staff and other town staff were mentioned as available to help examine the ordinance. A council member offered to facilitate individual follow-ups with staff and Partnership representatives.
The Shade Tree Commission also used public comment to announce recent work and outreach: Kristen Ace said the commission placed habitat-tree signs in Foots Pond, Lidgerwood, and Burnham Park and praised the town's DPW for installing logs for outdoor classrooms; she also said the commission is recruiting three members.
The council did not take formal regulatory action at the meeting; instead, members directed follow-up steps (subcommittee meeting with the vendor and staff review of the ordinance and exhaust options).
