The borough administrator told the council on May 20 that Kenilworth will receive a $300,000 Union County capital project grant to support improvements to the municipal kennel.
"The Union County Board of Commissioners Capital Project awards were announced, and I'm happy to say that the kennel will be receiving $300,000," the administrator said. Staff will review and prioritize the scope of the kennel project to best use the non‑matching grant, the administrator added.
Separately, the borough will participate in a United Way‑run summer youth employment program that provides a paid, six‑week placement for youth ages 16 to 24. The program is fully funded by the United Way, but the borough must provide supervision and sign‑off on time sheets.
The administrator said the borough hopes to host three youth workers: one in public works to help with recycling operations, one in the construction office, and one to float among borough offices to assist with backlog tasks. The administrator also thanked municipal departments — police, fire, DPW, board of health and volunteers — for their roles supporting the recent Kenilworth Street Fair and classic car show.
Why this matters: the kennel grant represents a capital infusion that will require project scoping and prioritization by borough staff; the United Way youth placements provide temporary labor support to municipal departments while offering paid work experience for local youth.
No formal council vote on either the kennel project scope or the youth placements was recorded at the May 20 meeting; staff said they will review project scope and return with implementation specifics.
