Mayor Terrence Curran read a proclamation at the May 20 Township Committee meeting declaring May 23–31, 2025 as Buddy Poppy Days in Cranford and urging residents to support the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Buddy Poppy campaign.
The proclamation recounted the red poppy’s symbolism stemming from World War I and noted that Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled veterans and that proceeds fund assistance for veterans, widows and orphans. Mayor Curran specifically recognized Captain Newell Rodney Fisk and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 335 in Cranford for long‑standing community service.
Commander Schwartz of the local VFW accepted the proclamation and said Cranford supports its veterans and public‑safety partners; he told the committee that while the poppies are used for fundraising, “the most important thing is to remember” the fallen and those who served. Committee members and the business administrator thanked VFW members and noted the group’s outreach and assistance in the community. The proclamation will be displayed at the VFW.
