Cranford committee introduces single‑use plastics ordinance; some commissioners voice enforcement concerns

The Township Committee on June 24 introduced Ordinance 2025‑16 to amend the municipal code with a new article addressing single‑use plastics.
Mayor Terrence Curran made the motion to introduce the ordinance on first reading; the motion passed by roll‑call vote. A public hearing on the ordinance was scheduled for Aug. 19, 2025, and the ordinance will be published in full in the July 3 edition of the Westfield Leader.
Commissioner Gina Black said she was “a little confused” about sponsoring the measure and questioned whether enforcement and fines were necessary or whether a cultural change led by local businesses would be preferable. She said the ordinance had business support but expressed reservations about imposing fines on noncompliant businesses.
Mayor Curran and other supporters framed the measure as a public‑health and environmental step that local businesses largely already support. Curran cited health concerns associated with plastics and said reductions could also be financially beneficial to retailers.
No enforcement details were adopted at first reading; the ordinance will return for a public hearing and possible amendment.
