Cranford introduces vacant‑property registration ordinance with escalating fees

Andrews said privately owned vacant properties can “create nuisances and public health problems,” depress nearby property values and “diminish the nearby quality of life,” and described the ordinance as an additional enforcement tool to address blight while encouraging productive economic activity.
The Township Committee approved Ordinance 2025‑15 on first reading by roll call and scheduled a public hearing for Aug. 19, 2025; the ordinance will be published in the July 3 edition of the Westfield Leader. The motion to introduce the ordinance passed unanimously.
Commissioners discussed the goal of supporting property maintenance enforcement and using registration fees to fund enforcement work. No fines or final fee schedule were adopted at introduction; the ordinance will return for public hearing and further consideration at the August session.
