The Oklahoma City Council unanimously approved revocable permits for two summer events: the fourth annual River Bowl at Riversport and the Out West Music Bus street event in the West Village.
Tricia Downey, national events manager at RiverSport, said Riversport sought exclusive use of the river for the River Bowl. "We're gonna invite you to cheer on alumni and students of Oklahoma City. They will be doing dragon boat racing and kayaking," Downey said. Shauntae Alexander, executive director of the Oklahoma City Black Alumni Coalition, said the event is a Black-led, Black-centered regatta she described as unique nationally: "We are the only black led and black centered regatta in the nation," Alexander said, and noted a free community screening and appearances by Black rowing Olympians on the Friday preceding the regatta.
Karen Medina, West Village coordinator for Downtown OKC Partnership, described the Out West Music Bus pilot as a July 25 event that will close portions of West Sheridan and South Lee to create rotating activations, live music and food trucks and to involve local businesses as indoor venues. Council members from Ward 7 and Ward 6 each moved approval for their respective events; both motions passed unanimously.
Organizers said the events emphasize community engagement, local vendors and expanded access to city recreation and cultural programming. No council conditions were recorded at the meeting.
