Committee forwards multiple utility-scale solar projects with conditions on storage, screening and decommissioning

The Iroquois County Tax and Planning Zoning Committee on July 1 voted to forward findings of fact and recommended conditions to the full county board for three utility-scale solar projects — Prairie View Solar, Tributary Solar and North Sheldon Solar — and discussed additional hearings, safety reviews and monitoring requirements before construction and operation.

The committee’s action sends the Zoning Board of Appeals’ recommendations and a set of project-specific conditions to the county board for final approval; the conditions add or clarify requirements for vegetative screening, emergency-response and fire-protection planning tied to battery storage, decommissioning financial assurances and annual reporting of the projects’ electrical output.

Ruben Grandin, product director with Green Key Solar, spoke at the meeting in support of Prairie View Solar, saying the company “has demonstrated that our project is fully compliant with all of the state statute obligations and the county ordinance” and asked the committee to approve the application. County staff briefed the committee on how the projects will move through the conditional-use and building-permit processes.
