So 31 physical days, we have to clean over 2,000,000 square feet," Facilities staff member Mr. Ryan told the committee, describing the scale of nightly cleaning and summer transitions across the district’s 21 buildings and ongoing summer programs at 12 schools.
Key items under way or planned for the summer included: finalizing bid documents for sidewalk and concrete repairs to be issued within a week; selecting a winning bidder for lawn maintenance after a recent bid opening; boiler cleaning under the bid limit; district‑wide door hardware assessment and planned RFP in late July; ongoing chiller repairs (York completed, North Wales and the high school waiting on parts); and installation of additional bottle‑fill water stations where schools request them.
Ryan emphasized a district goal to shift from reactive maintenance to preventative planning, including a departmental review of work‑order systems (SchoolDude/maintenance direct and potential alternatives), multi‑year budget planning and an organizational staffing assessment to prepare for retirements and future needs. He said the custodial team will hold an end‑of‑summer meeting for recognition, team building and staff development to prepare second‑shift staff for leadership roles.
On bottle‑fill stations, staff said the district previously used capital funds to purchase initial units two years ago. Additional stations requested by individual schools are funded by the schools’ own budgets; Penn Dale had purchased five this year from its school funds and the district installed them prior to summer programming.
