The Prince George's County Board of Education voted to close its June 30, 2025, virtual meeting at 6:02 p.m. to discuss pending legal matters and personnel appointments, Board Chairman Brandon Jackson said.
Jackson told members the meeting would be closed “under the following provisions from General Provisions Article §3-305(b)(1), (7) and (12)” and read the reasons the board cited for the closure: “legal matters because discussing pending and ongoing litigation in public may impact ongoing legal matters… personnel appointments and staffing because publicly disclosing applicants' personal information will not protect their identities and could discourage candidates from applying.”
The board's roll call showed seven members present. After the reading and brief roll call, the chairman asked, “Shall Prince George's County Board of Education close the 06/30/2025 board meeting?” The motion to close was adopted; the board then directed all members to exit the public meeting and re‑enter a special closed session, the clerk and chairman said.
At the start of the public portion, the chairman also reviewed the board's Internet meeting rules, saying members must keep cameras on, mute microphones until recognized, and that failure to follow the rules could result in removal from the meeting. The board did not take any other public actions on the record after the vote to close; discussion in the closed session was not recorded in the public transcript.
The closure means the board will consider matters in private that the board determined meet the statutory exceptions it cited, specifically legal consultation and personnel matters. The board did not provide additional details about the litigation or specific personnel matters in the public portion of the meeting.
