Residents urge county action on behavioral‑health facility; commissioners say coordination is underway

Several residents urged the Cowlitz County Board of Commissioners to pursue development of a local behavioral-health facility during the meeting’s public-comment period, and asked the board to clarify how existing prevention and settlement funds could be used.

One speaker said they “just wanna continue to speak in support of the mental health facility that we would like to see built in our local community,” and asked commissioners to examine prevention funding in the health department and monies from pharmaceutical settlements that the speaker had heard might be unavailable for a facility. The county’s public record shows staff and commissioners responded that the question about specific settlement funds was rumor and not confirmed in county materials presented at the meeting.

A commissioner (on the record as a county official) told the meeting they had discussed facility needs with the sheriff, judges, drug court and other stakeholders and that “we're coordinating more conversations about once those funds have been allocated, what it's gonna be used for, and we can report that back to you guys.” The same speaker said they had not encountered anyone opposed to the idea but described the work as coordination among many “moving puzzle pieces” and suggested appointing a point person to provide accountability and drive the effort forward.

An attendee asked whether the board had scheduled a workshop on the mental-health proposal; county staff said they had not scheduled one yet and were waiting to coordinate with Commissioner Bell to find a date that fit all commissioners’ schedules.

Speakers stressed that any decisions about allocation of funds would be made in public meetings. The board did not take formal action on facility planning at this meeting; commissioners directed staff to continue coordination and to return to the board with further details as they are developed.
