Council extends vendor agreement for BRAIN energy-management system to June 2026

The Santa Fe City Council on June 30 approved amendment No. 1 to extend Paradise Power Company Inc.'s contract for implementation of the Balanced Resource Acquisition and Information Network, known as the BRAIN, to June 30, 2026.
Project staff told the council the extension aligns with a state grid-modernization grant amendment and will allow the city to add features and finish deliverables without losing grant funding. Karen Gross, public works project manager, said the city has submitted deliverable No. 3 to the state and that the grant amendment had already been returned to the state for approval.
Gross described the BRAIN as "an energy management system which allows the user to see energy usage in nearly real time, shift resources in conjunction with demand and production of renewable energy, as well as see where building systems are in need of attention and send maintenance teams to assess and make repairs." She told the council the platform includes an integrated data repository with machine-learning and neural-network predictive models and both internal and public dashboards. Gross also said the project received a $550,000 federal grant passed through the state and that staff are working with the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) and a subdivision called ECAM.
Councilors asked to schedule a demonstration of the platform once audiovisual issues in the chambers are resolved; Gross said the city expects a large touchscreen to be installed in July and offered to give the council a tour in the conference room when feasible. The council approved the contract extension by roll call; the motion passed unanimously among members present.
Staff said the city will schedule an in-person demonstration of the BRAIN platform and provide additional updates after the touchscreen and AV are working.
