Santa Fe fire inspector urges use of 'safe and sane' fireworks, offers safety tips for Fourth

Mark Rolstad, a fire inspector with the City of Santa Fe Fire Department, urged residents ahead of Fourth of July celebrations to use only fireworks labeled “safe and sane” and to follow manufacturer instructions.
“Be sure to look for the safe and sane labeling on the packaging,” Rolstad said, adding that anything that goes airborne and explodes is not allowed within city limits. He said devices labeled “caution” are permissible but items bearing a “warning” label are not allowed.
Rolstad recommended using fireworks outdoors, away from buildings, on flat, hard surfaces free from vegetation or other combustible materials and to follow all manufacturer recommendations. He invited residents to the City of Santa Fe’s public fireworks display at Santa Fe Place Mall and closed with a safety reminder: “We want you to have a good time this Fourth of July, but more importantly, we want you to be safe.”
