Dalton ratifies pre-application for $2 million ARC grant for East Morris Corridor improvements

The Dalton Mayor and Council on June 30, 2025 ratified a pre-application to the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) seeking $2 million in grant funds for phase 1 of the East Morris Corridor improvements.
Chad, a public-works staff member, told the council the ARC grant would supplement 2024 SPLOST funding already allocated to the East Morris Corridor project and would allow the city to expand the project scope if awarded. The pre-application requests $2,000,000 and requires a 50 percent local match; Chad said the match would be covered by the city’s 2024 SPLOST funds.
Council members voted to ratify the pre-application and authorized the mayor (or the city representative) to proceed with the full application. Chad said the city had received approval earlier that day to move forward with a full ARC application; the city does not yet know whether the grant will be awarded.
If awarded, the grant would more than double the current project scope, the presentation said. Staff will return with the full ARC application materials and any final contractual obligations if the grant is awarded.
