Irvine — The Irvine City Council on May 27 conducted a public hearing on a proposed adjustment to the city’s Landscape, Lighting & Park Maintenance Assessment District for fiscal year 2025–26 and authorized the public tabulation of mailed ballots.
Staff explained the proposed levy adjustments and the process for ballot tabulation under state law. The council received four in‑person speakers during the hearing; public commenters raised general objections to new assessments and described fiscal pressures but did not alter the technical process.
Carl Peterson, the city clerk and elections official, announced the tabulation process and designated staff to be the official ballot tabulator. The clerk said the ballot counting would commence immediately and continue the next day in a public conference room; final results will be announced at the June 10 council meeting. The council adopted the required resolution to approve the engineer’s levy report and to permit public observation of the ballot tabulation; the roll call vote was 7–0.
Why it matters: if a majority of assessment ballots returned oppose the proposed levy increase, the increase will not proceed. The council’s action authorizes the public process for counting and reporting results but does not itself change the assessment until the tabulation is complete.
