Members of the Peekskill Rotary presented $11,000 in donations to the district for the high school robotics team, VR equipment via the Peaceful Education Foundation, and completion of the Oakside greenhouse project.
The Peekskill Rotary Club presented the Peekskill City School District with $11,000 in aggregate donations at the May 20 board meeting to support extracurricular and instructional projects.
Tony Washington, president of the Peekskill Rotary Club and a district graduate, told the board the largest portion — $7,500 — will go to the Peekskill High School Iron Devils robotics team to help defray travel costs for competitions. “We’re happy to do that,” Washington said, noting that students will travel to regional and international competitions.
The Rotary also gave $2,500 to the Peaceful Education Foundation to assist the district with purchasing virtual-reality goggles for classroom use, and $1,000 to complete the Oakside greenhouse project, Washington said. Superintendent Dr. David Maurizio thanked the Rotary, the district’s PTO and the PEF for the donations and said the greenhouse and a new high-school recording studio — funded in part by earlier Rotary support — are nearing completion.
Dr. Maurizio said the high-school music studio now has equipment and a room built and that the district plans a ribbon-cutting early this summer. The board applauded the Rotary and partner organizations for their financial support.
The gift descriptions and dollar amounts were presented on the public record during the superintendent’s report; no board vote or formal contract was recorded for the donations at the meeting.
