The Peekskill Board of Education certified the May 20 vote results, declaring Proposition 1 (the school budget) approved and certifying three board candidates as elected following a canvass of the returns.
The Peekskill Board of Education on May 20 certified the results of the district’s budget vote and school-board election, declaring Proposition 1 approved and naming three winning candidates.
In a canvass conducted by board members, the board recorded 455 total votes on Proposition 1; 368 voted yes and 87 voted no. “We do now further certify that Proposition 1 was duly approved by a majority of the qualified voters present,” President Simpkins said as the board completed the canvass.
Board members then read vote totals for board-seat candidates. The board recorded: Frank Robinson Jr., 296 votes; Mary Angel Flores, 344 votes; Joanen Veil, 310 votes; and Heidi Kinga Gums, 268 votes. With three open three-year terms available, the board announced the winners as Frank Robinson Jr., Mary Angel Flores and Joanen Veil.
Trustee motions to accept the canvas were moved and seconded on the record. Mr. Jenkins moved to accept the canvass; the motion was seconded by another trustee and approved by voice vote with no recorded nays or abstentions.
The board thanked voters and noted the result “keeps the promise of Peekskill,” emphasizing the budget’s role in funding district programs going into the next school year.
The certification was taken as a formal board action during the business portion of the May 20 meeting; the board proceeded to adjourn after completing remaining agenda items.
