The Delta County Board of Commissioners approved restoring a full-time plumbing and mechanical inspector position in the building and zoning department and authorized a temporary part-time inspector position to handle permit work tied to local construction projects.
Jack Smith, Building and Zoning Administrator, told the board the department is “extremely swamped” with seasonal permit demand and several large, active projects, including a Kwik Trip distribution center, a solar project and the Billerwood development. Smith said the department had posted the inspector as full-time, then changed it to part-time to improve recruitment; the request restores the position to full-time to fill current needs.
Smith also requested a temporary, up-to-six-month part-time inspector (not to exceed $24,000) to support inspections and permitting for the Escanaba water project until the department catches up. Commissioners approved both items, while clarifying the county will allow future flexibility to split a full-time position into two part-time roles as long as combined compensation does not exceed the full-time package approved by the board.
The department said a longer-term recruitment plan will proceed but that the immediate workload requires additional staffing now to avoid permit backlogs and ensure inspections keep pace with construction schedules.
