Southside ISD honors national high school barbecue championship team

Trustees and district staff on Wednesday recognized students from Matthew Middle School and their coaches after the district’s teams won the high school national barbecue championship in Kansas City.
Superintendent Ramirez introduced the recognition and invited staff to honor students who placed in individual categories. Assistant (presenter) Martel and other staff named student placings: Viviana Marines (sixth grader) placed 10th in grilled cheese; Angel Perez (seventh grade) placed second in ribeye; Sofia Navarro (seventh grade) placed fourth in chicken lollipop; Luis Mendez (seventh grade) won first place for chili; and Miamo Delongo (seventh grade) placed sixth in ribs and ninth in brisket. Ramirez said the composite score earned the teams a national championship at the High School Barbecue Championship sponsored by Scheels.
The nut graf: District officials thanked parents, coaches and academic dean Amanda Montelongo for supporting the program; Ramirez said staff were considering renaming the championship trophy after Montelongo in recognition of her role.
The board offered a brief round of applause and there was no formal action required; the recognition was ceremonial.
