Port Huron council approves multiple labor contracts and nonunion pay adjustments

The Port Huron City Council approved new and extended collective bargaining agreements and authorized salary adjustments and a one-time payment for nonunion employees.

Council members voted to approve a new three-year agreement with the Command Officers Association of Michigan (through June 30, 2028); a new three-year agreement with the Patrol Officers Association of Michigan (through June 30, 2028); two-year extensions through June 30, 2028 for the city utility workers and utility workers supervisory unit; and a two-year extension for the Port Huron Clerical Association through June 30, 2028. The council also authorized the city manager to grant nonunion employees salary adjustments or additional merit consideration effective for pay periods beginning June 28, 2025; June 27, 2026; and June 26, 2027, and to pay a one-time payment of $1,200 on or before July 25, 2025 to each full-time nonunion employee who is actively employed on July 1, 2025.

The package of agreements and nonunion adjustments was presented as a group; council members said human resources and labor representatives had worked to finalize the contracts. Mayor Ashford and council members thanked staff and union representatives for completing negotiations. The council approved the set of resolutions by roll-call vote; the clerk recorded unanimous 'yes' votes from members present.

Council members noted the public had raised questions about the council budget; councilors clarified that the change in audit cost previously discussed was not a council pay raise but an audit contract expense paid from the council budget. No further changes to the agreements were made at the meeting.
