The Dearborn City Council on Tuesday took the ordinance off the table and approved updated water and sewer rates for fiscal year 2026, a 3.3% increase scheduled to take effect July 1, 2025.
Council members said the city's water-and-sewer rates are updated annually as part of the budget process. The ordinance sets a rate methodology that allocates 28% of a customer's bill to fixed charges and 72% to usage-based charges. City staff told the council the average residential customer will see an increase of roughly $7.41 per quarter under the new structure.
"For residential customers with an average usage, the 2026 rates will reflect a 3.3% increase, which is about $7.41 per quarter," a staff summary presented to the council said. Council completed the second and final reading of the ordinance and approved it by roll call; the clerk recorded seven yes votes.
Council members did not make substantive amendments during the session; staff said the methodology remains unchanged from fiscal 2025. The ordinance will be implemented by the utility billing department and appear on customer bills beginning July 1.
