Board holds first reads and approves first-read motions on safety, visitors and several policies
Summary
On first read the board approved revisions and repeals recommended by the policy committee including a first read for school safety and security (policy 1200), visitors and observations (policy 1350), repeal of former bullying and opioid administration policies and adoption of Connecticut school climate and restorative-practices policies.
The Board of Education held first reads and approved motions from the policy committee on several policy items during the May 2025 meeting.
A motion was made "upon the recommendation of the policy committee" to hold a first read and approve revisions to policy 1200, school safety and security. The motion was seconded by Mike and carried after the board voted "aye." A subsequent motion to hold a first read and approve revisions to policy 1350, visitors and observations in schools, was seconded by Marsha and carried.
The board also moved to repeal policy 5120, bullying prevention and intervention; the motion was seconded by Angie and carried. The board agreed to repeal policy 5110, administration of opioid overdose prevention, following a motion seconded by Marsha.
New policy adoptions included 5125, Connecticut school climate, moved and seconded by Miriam, and 5460, restorative practices response, seconded by Miriam; both motions carried on first read. Each motion was introduced as "upon the recommendation of the policy committee" and was followed by a voice vote; meeting minutes record the motions as carried but do not include a roll-call tally in the public discussion.
