Board reviews five start-time/transportation models; cost and athletic impacts noted

The Cheshire Board of Education reviewed preliminary recommendations from the planning committee on bus-routing and school start-time options and asked for wider community input before a fall decision.

The committee presented five options: two retained the existing three-tier system (with variations) and three would move the district to a two-tier model. Planning staff said the two-tier options would require more buses — roughly 35 to 49 buses running simultaneously depending on the configuration — versus the current 36-bus peak across three tiers. Presenters used an illustrative basic cost of about $400 per bus per day and said that difference drives annual transportation costs.

Board members raised operational concerns. One member said later high-school start times can benefit adolescents’ sleep but also compress sub-varsity athletic schedules and affect middle-school sports logistics. Planning staff said option B (a later high-school start) was among the more cost-effective proposals among those presented because of how tiers shift but emphasized redistricting and enrollment distributions will affect final cost estimates.

The board directed staff to solicit targeted feedback from parents, staff and students and to circulate a broader community survey, with the goal of making a decision in the early fall to inform staffing and facility assignments for the new schools.

Less urgent: staff noted redistricting later in the fall will change routing and cost estimates and that presentations and a PowerPoint from the planning meeting will be made available to the public for review.
