District revises U.S. history units to include Asian American and Pacific Islander studies under Connecticut law

Wallingford updated two units of its high-school U.S. history course to meet Connecticut statutory requirements to incorporate Asian American and Pacific Islander studies into social studies curricula for 2025-26.
The Wallingford Board of Education on June 2 approved targeted revisions to two units of the high-school U.S. history course to incorporate Asian American and Pacific Islander content as required by Connecticut law for the 2025'26 school year.
Secondary humanities coordinator Carrie Laudatio said recent legislative changes require boards of education to include Asian American and Pacific Islander studies covering historical context, civil-rights contributions, notable figures and community impact. Laudatio presented two revised units (World War II/start of the Cold War/Korean War and a civil-rights-themed unit) with tracked deletions and additions so the board could see specific changes within the yearlong course.
"This course has 9 units total. You're only seeing revisions to 2," Laudatio said, and added the changes were intended to satisfy Connecticut General Statute 10-16w'style requirements to include AAPI content. The board approved the revisions by consensus.
Curriculum staff told the board the course still covers U.S. history through to the contemporary era in subsequent units; the two revised units are thematic and were updated to integrate the new AAPI statutory content. The revisions will be implemented as part of the regular high-school history sequence.
