Operations committee agrees to condensed monthly food-service summary after May shows $5,771 surplus

Food-services staff told the Wallingford School District operations committee on Monday that the lunch program posted a $5,771 surplus in May and a year-to-date surplus of $59,121, and the committee agreed to move to a condensed monthly summary for operations meetings while keeping detailed reports available.
Mr. Bondi, food services staff, reported, “for the month of May, our food services operations had a monthly surplus of $5,771, which brings our year to date surplus to $59,121. We served 70,850 meals during May, and we're expecting $159,846 in state and federal reimbursement.” He also said the district is owed $2,043 in state reimbursement for reduced-price meal eligibility.
The packet includes detailed breakout documents showing participation and inventory: breakfast participation in May was 25.8% at elementary schools, 10.3% at middle schools and 9.3% at high schools; lunch participation for May was 51.1% elementary, 54.7% middle and 44.2% high school.
Board members discussed streamlining the operations meeting presentation so Mr. Bondi would provide a single summary with the full detail attached to the agenda. Several members supported the change as an efficiency measure; one member asked that complaint/incident-tracking remain visible to the public so parents know the district is monitoring issues. Mr. Bondi and staff confirmed that detailed documents would remain accessible online and that items requiring action would be brought forward.
By consensus the committee approved using the high-level summary for operations meetings beginning when the committee resumes in September; detailed reports will remain in the meeting package and will be available for the full board meeting if members want a printed packet.
The committee also heard that food-service inventory activity and reimbursement estimates are included in the detailed reports and can be examined by members or the public by following links in the packet.
