Norwalk board wrestles with budget reconciliation as parents press to restore student-facing positions and extend superintendent

The Norwalk Board of Education on June 17 discussed a revised fiscal-year 2025–26 budget reconciliation after the city and state added roughly $6 million to the district allocation, prompting parents and staff to press board members to restore student-facing positions and delay personnel votes.

The discussion mattered because the board’s reconciliation dictates whether recently proposed cuts to elementary music, strings and other student-facing roles remain, which staff and community members said would directly affect classroom programs and school culture.

Parents, students and district employees used the meeting’s public-comment period to describe the programs and personnel they said were at risk and to call for greater transparency in the budget process. Alexis McCarthy, a parent from Fox Run, asked the board to “please share your detailed proposed budget publicly and be transparent.” Brian Acevedo, a district employee, said “Dr. Estrella doesn’t just believe in systems. She believes in people,” urging support for the superintendent.
