Danbury teacher highlights ESL awards and AP Spanish independent-study success for multilingual learners

Soraya Bilbao, who identified herself as in her 11th year teaching multilingual learners at Danbury High School, told the board that more than 180 multilingual learners were recognized at the district27s recent ESL awards ceremony for earning a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Bilbao said that number is more than double the inaugural event a decade earlier.
Bilbao also described an AP Spanish independent-study program for multilingual learners that she helped launch. She said the tenth cohort included 27 students in grades 11 and 12 who prepared after school and took the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam; 96.3% of those students scored a 3 or higher, compared with Connecticut27s 86.4% and the global rate of 82% for the exam cohort she cited.
Bilbao credited administrative support from district staff, including Stacy Brugnolo and Dr. Martins, and noted Dan Donovan27s backing of the AP program. She asked the board and staff to continue supporting programs that expand opportunities for multilingual learners and called the programs examples of how idea-driven initiatives can become established district offerings.
Board members thanked Bilbao and other staff; no formal board action was taken during the remarks.
