A school staff member from the Danbury School District reported that the school has seen reading gains and a near 10-point rise in science scores and described instructional steps the school is taking to raise math proficiency during a recent district meeting.
School staff member said the school is tracking an accountability index that separates high-needs students from others. The presenter said the school identified a decline in foundational skills among incoming students and that roughly 80% proficiency in a referenced area had declined compared with previous years, prompting a focus on math instruction.
"What we found recently is this, we needed to increase the student to student discourse," the school staff member said. To address the gap, the school emphasized more student-to-student talk, evidence-based mathematics instruction, and short peer-led sharing sessions in which teachers demonstrate techniques to colleagues.
The presenter described specific programs and emphases: regular teacher-to-teacher "un" meetings for quick strategy sharing; an instructional design (ID) focus for students who need additional support; a new math group intended to boost engagement and discourse; and culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR) practices to validate students' cultural backgrounds. The staff member said these steps are intended to target "highest-leverage" areas for growth rather than pursue one-size-fits-all solutions.
The presentation included quantitative context: staff noted the school implemented a new ELG framework two years ago and said science scores rose "almost 10 percentage points." The presenter added that the school still projects more learning in the remaining eight weeks of the year.
Teachers' professional activity was highlighted as part of the improvement plan: staff named teachers who have presented research at national conferences, including the American Educational Research Association, and noted student accomplishments such as publication and a regional history challenge finalist.
