Committee approves food-service contracts; summer meals to be free at open sites, launch event planned

The Finance and Operations Committee reviewed and approved forwarding a package of food-service contracts for the coming year and related purchase orders to the full board.
Food-service director Mister Young walked the committee through a list of vendors that will provide further-processed and primary food products for the district, including Maid-Rite (beef products), Hormel Food Sales (turkey products), JTM Provisions (sauces/pasta), Nordoni Brothers (pizza), Tyson Prepared Foods (chicken), Thurston Foods (main food vendor), Tasty Brands (pre-prepared sandwiches for summer grab-and-go sites), Guida’s Dairy (milk), Trio Community Meals (unitized breakfast packs), and local bread vendors J and G Baked Goods and Loopies. Young said that the department provides per-unit cost detail for many purchases — “down to the per unit amount, like 60¢ per unit for 25,000 unit” — and that overall price increases were “slight” compared with the prior year.
Committee members asked whether summer meals would be free; Young said summer meals are free for children under age 18 at open sites. He said the department uses Tasty Brands to provide grab-and-go sandwiches for some summer sites and that van sites sometimes include hot pizza on Fridays. Young said milk and all reimbursable meal components will be provided with the summer meals. He also said the district receives federal reimbursement for meals served during the school year.
Young told the committee a summer rollout/launch event is scheduled for July 1 and that he would send the flyer and related information to the full board; committee members requested staff circulate launch details so board members can share access information with constituents.
Board members raised accommodations for dietary or cultural food restrictions. Young said the department has been working to implement meal modifications and that parents who provide medical documentation enable the district to make accommodations (for example, gluten-free buns where appropriate).
The committee chair made a motion that sent the full package of one abstract, one agreement, three purchase orders and 15 contracts to the full board; the motion passed.
