Committee reviews $5 million state adult-education abstract, two federal program grants

Committee members were briefed on three grant abstracts to support New Haven adult education, including a state Department of Education operating grant and two federal competitive grants.
"The first abstract is our state department of education grant, a little over $5,000,000," presenter Miss Benora said, adding that the grant covers the programs expenses and local share. She told the committee the program served more than 1,600 students this year with 135 graduates and that the state had signaled flat funding for the upcoming year.
Benora also presented a $235,000 federal program-enhancement continuation that funds cohort-style specialty programs including family literacy, a manufacturing pathway, a CNA program and a gateway-to-college offering at adult-education sites. She said more than 30 CNA students graduated from that cohort and five transitioned into the trades.
A third abstract is the IELCE (Integrated English Language and Civics Education) program for English-language learners. Benora described that grant as "probably the most volatile" because its funding renewal was uncertain and said the district may shift funds between grants to maintain services if necessary.
Committee members had no substantive objections and asked for additional performance metrics; Doctor Yarbrough requested percentages and targets for participant progress and Benora said she would follow up with end-of-year data when the state report is due in July.
Discussion: staff planned to submit the abstracts and to provide follow-up performance data; the committee voted to forward the meetings package to the full board.
