Norwalk council increases annual support for senior center, approves $800,000 agreement

The Norwalk Common Council on June 24 authorized the mayor to execute an agreement providing $800,000 for the Norwalk Senior Center to support operations and services during the period July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026.

Nicole Ayers, chairwoman of the Community Services Committee, told the council the item was removed from the consent calendar to allow the senior-center executive director to speak and to reassure residents that the council intends to maintain and increase funding. "At no time, and in no way will we cut this funding — we're actually increasing it by 10 percent," Ayers said.

Beatrice Lane, executive director of the Norwalk Senior Center, described the center as a high‑volume community hub that provides benefit-assistance, fall-prevention and exercise programs, transportation and meal services, and other supports for adults 55 and older. Lane said the center serves thousands of Norwalk residents each year, serves as a designated focal point for aging services and relies on a small staff and roughly 40 volunteers to deliver programs.

Chief Daniels, who administers the city's grant to the center, told the council the $800,000 award represents continuity in a long-standing municipal relationship; the department increased its support in recent years and will continue to administer the funds.

The council approved the agreement by voice vote; the clerk recorded the consent-item vote as unanimous. The authorization directs the mayor to execute any and all agreements and amendments necessary to fund operations for the June 2025–June 2026 year. Council members asked staff to schedule a senior-centered forum so center participants can address the council directly at a future date.
