The Mineola Union Free School District Board of Education opened part of its Jan. 9 meeting with student recognitions for fall athletes and acknowledged Fatima Badula as a Regeneron Science Talent Search semifinalist.

He told the board that the student tested whether a substance commonly called bitter melon (M. charantia) could affect blood-glucose measures using a fruit-fly model.
