Princeton Council Reviews Revised Community Park South Plan; Designers Preserve Tree Canopy, Propose Phased $25M Project

Consultants and Princeton recreation staff presented an updated concept plan for Community Park South on June 23 that keeps most of the site's existing tree canopy, consolidates program elements around a central pavilion and lays out a three-phase approach to a projected $25 million build-out.
The plan, led by Bowman Consulting Group and landscape designer Mick Humes of Mahan Bridal Associates, rearranges amenities to avoid removing mature trees and to create a larger contiguous athletic and flexible-lawn area. Humes described a "central pavilion, with restroom facility" as "one of the hearts of this overall park," a shaded hub intended for gatherings adjacent to fields, playgrounds, tennis and dog-park zones.
Designers showed a 30,000-foot overview and said next steps include preparing 30% construction documents with cost estimates targeted for September, then value engineering and phasing. Council members and advocates pressed for details on shading, how many gathering locations would be provided and whether trees would be planted at larger sizes so canopy benefits appear sooner. Mick Humes and the project team said the plan includes multiple shade structures and roughly seven or eight covered gathering areas across the site.
