Sayreville secures new grants and advances park projects; automated recycling cans, groundskeeping extensions approved

Business Administrator Glenn reported that the borough received a DCA grant of $500,000 for the Jerry Us Recreational Complex, a Clean Communities grant of $103,117.49 and a recycling enhancement grant of $10,000. Glenn said the overall project funding was roughly $4.8 million, including legislative grants and a $1 million contribution from Trammell Crow. “4.8 approximately. $4,800,000,” Glenn said when asked about the project total.
Officials said the borough moved ahead with bidding for the baseball field and parking improvements to advance the project while additional funding for a multipurpose field is secured. Borough Engineer Jay Cornell said bids are being accepted for the Borough Hall walkway and that remediation plans for the firehouse are complete and under architectural review before remediation bidding.
On the consent agenda the council authorized several related purchases and extensions, including an extension of groundskeeping contracts (Chris Landscaping’s contract adjusted to $101,852.48 for one additional year) and an authorization to purchase 95‑gallon automated recycling cans from IPL North America through an HGAC contract not to exceed $41,372.23. Council also heard a report that automated recycling cans will be distributed beginning in July and the carts will be required for use starting Aug. 1.
Council members said the automated cans are expected to reduce litter from recycling setouts and that the borough will continue public education about the new containers. Bids and grant administration will continue; the borough said it will report back to the council as contracts and contractor selections are completed.
