Spencer County adopts resolution to pursue Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for Ray Jewel park work

County Judge Scott Travis told the court the draft resolution includes an estimated total project cost of $500,000, meaning the county—s required local match would be roughly $250,000 under the standard 50% match. He said existing work and expenses at the park—s site, including grading, drainage, rock work and grass seeding, could be counted toward the local match.
The court emphasized the $500,000 figure is an estimate for the grant application and can be revised. Commissioners discussed that previous work already invested in the park could reduce the new local cash outlay and noted the grant application must be filed by the June 15 deadline; the court scheduled a public meeting on June 2 to discuss the grant application before finalizing the resolution.
A motion by Commissioner Mike, seconded by Commissioner Will, passed to approve the resolution with the estimated project total of $500,000. The court discussed potential eligible uses such as parking, facilities, walking paths, fishing access and other recreational improvements that the fund typically supports.
Judge Travis and parks staff said they would present more detailed cost information and a refined project budget at the June meeting to identify the county—s matching funds and eligible in-kind contributions such as volunteer labor.
