The City of Spokane announced it will begin two pedestrian and bicycle improvement projects on Monday and has added seasonal 20 mph speed-limit signs at several neighborhood parks, a city staff member said.
The projects and the new park signs aim to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and will cause temporary traffic disruptions in the areas affected, city officials said.
On Lincoln Street, the Lincoln Street pedestrian and bike safety project will close Lincoln Street between Boone Avenue and Cinto Avenue for construction work. Also starting Monday, the Maxwell bike and pedestrian safety project will station workers at the intersection of Maxwell Avenue and Pettit Drive and will impact Maxwell Avenue between Pettit Drive and Ash Street for several weeks; the city warned that this may disrupt traffic during peak times.
The city also added seasonal 20 mph signs at the following parks: AM Cannon, Chief Gary, Comstock, Hays, Lincoln and Mission. A city staff member urged drivers to slow down and watch for people walking and biking.
“Please slow down and look for pedestrians. Thank you for working with us this construction season,” the staff member said.
The city encouraged people to slow down, follow posted detours and support businesses affected by the construction. For more information, the staff member said residents should visit the City of Spokane website and click the construction icon.
