The Harahan City Council approved a budget amendment (Ordinance 2025-7) June 26 to purchase camera systems for the police station and city hall, using capital project funds with the expectation of full or partial reimbursement from state and parish grants.
Chiefs and staff drove the outreach for grant funding: the council said the city had secured a 57,000 grant package to pay for cameras presented at the meeting, and staff described additional legislative allocations for playground cameras ($10,000) and for police equipment including body and dash cameras (roughly $300,000 range mentioned in discussion) pending final paperwork. Finance Director Todd Turnion said the purchases are being advanced to lock in prices and that the city expects reimbursement once grant funds are received.
Council members credited the police chief and staff for pursuing outside funding, saying the purchases significantly improve public safety monitoring at city facilities. The council approved the budget amendment unanimously and instructed staff to proceed with procurement under the capital-fund appropriation and to return funds to the capital fund when reimbursements arrive.
