The Mahoning County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Thursday, June 26, to approve routine business items including contracts, change orders and a set of resolutions covering grant applications, appointments and opioid settlement disbursements.
Among the items the board approved were: an amendment related to the TANF summer youth program with UNESCO Resources LLC in an amount of $825,000; a set of service and vendor contracts including dental administration, cleaning, and map printing; and several home-repair and healthy-homes contracts with local vendors for amounts described in the staff report. Commissioners also approved change orders for housing-rehab projects and a sanitary-department repair contract.
The board approved a resolution to place a renewal levy on the ballot for services serving nearly 2,000 county residents. Bill Whitaker, a speaker at the meeting, said the levy’s collections largely fund a Medicaid match he described as "nearly $16,000,000 a year," which he said brings more than $104,000,000 in services to county residents and supports more than 1,000 workers in county programs. "A very big piece of these levy collections goes towards what we call our Medicaid match, which is nearly $16,000,000 a year," Whitaker said.
Under resolutions the board also approved entering opioid settlement agreements allocating $87,581.51 to the Community Corrections Association and $200,000 to the Mahoning County Fire Chiefs Association, as listed in the staff packet. The board approved a number of personnel appointments for jobs and family services and a prosecutor-backed resolution to pursue state grants for victims’ services (items included a VOCA-grant amount cited in the staff report).
The meeting record shows the board moved to approve minutes and bills, heard and approved numerous agreements (including an $825,000 TANF amendment), accepted change orders, and adopted resolutions by roll call with "yes" votes recorded for each commissioner during the session. No contested votes were recorded in the roll calls read aloud. The board also advertised a bid opening scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27.
The commissioners adjourned and set their next meeting for Thursday, July 3 at 10 a.m.
