City of Deltona stormwater staff described routine inspections used to find erosion, blocked pipes and failing joints and said crews are replacing a leaking pipe joint near Derby and Austin.
Jason, a City of Deltona Stormwater Division staff member, said crews check for erosion and structural damage when they "pull up the structure" and "make sure there's no collapsed pipes, not full of dirt, there's no blockages in the pipes so the water can flow out as it should." He said inspectors look for standing water, cracks in corners and holes in the bottom of boxes and remove grass or roots that reduce visibility.
Luke, a heavy equipment operator with the Stormwater Division, described a repair job at Derby near Austin. "We're on location here on Derby, near Austin and replacing this, joint here on this pipe that's been leaking and causing depressions in the road," he said. Luke said crews plan to excavate, replace the joint, rewrap the pipe and backfill to restore the road surface.
City staff demonstrated routine steps for visual inspection, including lifting lids for inside inspection, checking perimeter conditions and watching for smoke or other signs of infiltration during separate inspections. Officials framed these activities as routine maintenance to ensure proper drainage and reduce flood risk in the right of way.
No formal actions or policy changes were announced; staff described ongoing maintenance and a specific joint replacement that crews said they will complete.
