Riverhead board accepts trustee resignation and appoints two district leaders

The Riverhead Central School District Board of Education on June 10 accepted the resignation of Trustee Brian Connolly and approved two senior personnel appointments, the board announced at its regular meeting.
Board members said the resignation and appointments matter because they affect district leadership and the chain of command as the district prepares for the 2025-26 school year.
At the meeting Board Trustee Miss Healy moved and Board Trustee Mister Wallace seconded a motion to accept Brian Connolly’s resignation; the motion passed on a voice vote. The board said Connolly served seven years, including as board president during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that he stepped down for personal reasons. The board also said it will consider appointing someone to fill Connolly’s seat until the next trustee election in May 2026.
Also on the consent agenda, the board approved the appointment of Gary Carlson as principal of Riley Avenue Elementary School, effective July 1, 2025. The resolution sets Carlson’s appointment as a three-year probationary appointment in the tenure area of elementary principal, effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028, with a starting salary of $172,845.40 for the 2025-26 school year.
The board also approved the resignation of Laura Arcuri as principal of Pulaski Street Elementary School, effective June 30, 2025, and her appointment as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, effective July 1, 2025. The appointment is a four-year probationary appointment in the tenure area of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2029.
Board Trustee Miss Redmond and others publicly thanked the departing and promoted staff during the meeting. The motions to approve the personnel items passed unanimously by voice vote.
The board did not take a public vote on filling the vacant trustee seat at the meeting; trustees said they will consider an interim appointment that would last until the May 2026 trustee election.
