JC Commander, the district athletic director, reviewed spring athletics on June 26, highlighting team improvements, individual awards and college commitments.
Commander said 155 student athletes competed in spring sports and 84 earned academic All‑America status (3.0 GPA or better), representing about 54 percent of spring athletes. He reported specific team and individual accomplishments: softball placed third in the conference with 22 athletes and coach Christy Browning named Lake Erie League coach of the year; baseball finished 12–7 with first‑team selections and a league MVP, Javon “JJ” Hudson; volleyball finished 6–7 and earned a home playoff game; girls flag football hosted large jamborees and a playoff; track and field sent 14 athletes to regionals, and Darren Morrow advanced to state in the 300‑meter hurdles.
Commander listed several seniors who signed to play at the next level, including athletes headed to Bluffton, Miami‑Hamilton, Central State and Ursuline. He also said a strength‑and‑conditioning program run by Adrian Clark produced improvements for 82 percent of participating athletes in two or more core lifts.
Commander discussed the dissolving of the Lake Erie League and said Bedford will play as an independent for the 2025‑26 school year across fall, winter and spring seasons while the athletic department seeks a new league affiliation. He said independence presents scheduling and playoff challenges but also an opportunity to strengthen offerings across multiple sports before petitioning to join a league.
Board members responded with praise for academic emphasis and for the role athletics plays in post‑secondary opportunities; no formal action was taken beyond the presentation.
