School committee reviews student activity account housekeeping; DESE compliance will close dormant accounts

The School Committee considered a routine annual review of student activity accounts required by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Staff said the rule requires that accounts with no activity for three years be deactivated and balances transferred to active accounts or used for student activities at the principal’s discretion.
District staff presented a list of accounts from the high school, Morse Pond and Lawrence showing account names, residual balances, last activity dates and principal recommendations for transfers. The high school holds the largest number of accounts; a number of small balances were proposed to be consolidated (for example, rugby and golf club balances recommended to transfer to wrestling or other active clubs). Staff said one discontinued program (‘‘t plus’’) had a residual balance to be made available to the principal for student activities.
Committee members asked how far back some accounts dated; staff said the three‑year rule drives the process and noted older inactive accounts are being caught up in this annual housekeeping. Staff said the committee will vote on closing and transferring accounts in July (June discussion was informational).
