Avon Town Councilors on June 26 discussed scheduling a groundbreaking ceremony for the town’s Civic Center after staff reported pavement would likely be installed the following week.
Ryan (town staff) told councilors the site should have pavement by July and proposed three possible dates for a groundbreaking: July 17, July 22 and July 29, with the July 29 date requiring an evening event. He asked council members about their availability and whether a morning or evening event would be preferable, noting July daytime temperatures.
Council members said they preferred a date when all five councilors, the Redevelopment Commission and school representatives could attend. One council member said the July 29 evening option was preferable because the paving schedule remained uncertain and the July 17 date felt tight for invitations and preparation. Staff said they would coordinate with the schools and the RDC, verify paving progress and return with a recommended date.
Council members also discussed logistics including parking, narrow streets at the Civic Center site and whether a school bus could be used for transport; staff said parking along nearby streets should suffice if paving is complete. A councilor characterized the Civic Center as “the largest project the town has ever done,” and staff said they would arrange site visits for councilors before the event if desired.
No formal action was taken; staff will follow up with scheduling and preparations once paving is confirmed.
