Doctor Cartesana presented the district's recommended changes to the code of conduct and the board approved the second reading and adoption that night.
Cartesana said the district's discipline committee reviews the code annually. The highlights presented included deleting graffiti from level 4 because it was also listed in level 5, adding a required written self-reflection under dispositions for levels 3, 4 and 5, and clarifying that discipline guidelines apply to all students with age-appropriate recommendations for behaviors such as no gossiping, appropriate footwear for gym/recess and proper Chromebook care. "Each year, our district wide discipline committee meets to review our code of conduct and come up with any recommendations for changes," Cartesana said.
The board moved and approved the recommended changes during the meeting; the president read the resolution and members voted in the affirmative. Board discussion that preceded the vote praised collaboration with parents, faculty and administrators to align the code with district values.
What changed: removal of the duplicated graffiti classification, a new written self-reflection component for higher-level infractions, and a footnote confirming discipline expectations cover all grades with age-appropriate language. Administration said the changes codify practices already in place in some classrooms and will be communicated to families.
Implementation: building administrators will incorporate the revised conduct guidelines into school handbooks and annual notifications to parents.
