During the public comment portion of the June 26 meeting, a Centerville High School student urged the Fairfax County School Board to expand and reshape student representation and participation. Later in the meeting the board thanked and heard parting remarks from outgoing student school board member Megan Sawant.
In public comment, a rising tenth‑grader who identified herself as Mia called for several changes: rename the student‑rep selection process to make the representative the superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) representative; expand the selection electorate beyond SAC members so that Student Government Association (SGA) representatives participate; establish three student representatives mirroring the board’s three at‑large members; grant the student representative an official vote; open boundary‑review conversations to student input; and rotate high‑school graduation venues rather than privileging some schools’ use of Constitution Hall.
“We must start somewhere for change to occur,” the speaker said, arguing that SAC’s selection process is not consistently representative of the county’s student body.
Later the board’s student representative, Megan Sawant, gave a wide‑ranging farewell speech recounting her year on the board and the work of student advisory structures. Sawant said her primary goal had been “to bring student voice to the table” and to help students see how decisions are made and how they can participate. She highlighted achievements during the year including work on the budget, collective bargaining, the capital improvement plan, boundary review and expanded CTE offerings, and emphasized continuing priorities such as safety, mental‑health access and navigating technology and AI in classrooms.
Board members thanked Sawant for her service and said they would follow her post‑graduation work; Sawant noted she would remain engaged with the division and alumni networks.
